Joan Tallan Artist Statement The author Ernest Hemingway wrote, "Never think that war, no matter how necessary, nor how justified, is not a crime." The woodcuts presented here protest war and the politics that lead to war. The series was started in 2006 and continues on. Unfortunately no end is in sight. The earliest prints shown here are based on newspaper and magazine photos. The reality of this is the horror. The death and destruction happened, and is still happening. Mr Bush's War l and ll are reactions to the turmoil and destruction in Iraq and Lebanon. The Israeli Funeral, displays the anguish of a soldiers, family and friends as they as they gather to bury a fallen soldier. I include Lebanon and Israel in my subject matteras I believe the bloodshed in those two countries is linked to our policy in the Middle East. Death Heads, portrays the specter of death, hovering over the battlefield and in the air. The most recent prints Golan, Golan II, and Golan lll refer to a war memorial placed in the Golan Heights to honor the war dead of the 1967 war with Syria. I use them here as a memorial to the dead of all wars. In addition there is a concurrent series with the shared theme of beaches. We all need some R and R. I hope these prints are successful in eliciting a thoughtful response from the people who view them. | ||||||||||||
